NE Entrepreneurs In Finals Of Prestigious Scottish Award

Two Aberdeenshire brothers have secured a joint finalist position in one of Scotland’s most high profile business awards.

Grant and Gregor Keenan, who run Keenan Recycling, have been shortlisted in the Ernst & Young Scotland Entrepreneur of the Year 2012.

Launched in 2001, the firm transforms food and garden waste into BSI (British Standard) accredited compost at an award winning £5m facility at New Deer in Aberdeenshire, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world.

Thirty business leaders from a range of organisations are competing to win the prestigious title, which recognises growth in the challenging economic climate. Judges will consider entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, strategic direction, financial performance, national and global impact and approach to social responsibility.

The 30 are among 150 companies short-listed across the UK that will compete at regional award events being held in June. Each regional award winner will go forward to vie for the title of Ernst & Young UK Overall Entrepreneur of the Year.

Previous winners of the Scottish title include Martin Gilbert, Keith Miller, Bob Keiller, Brian Souter, Robert Wiseman and Sir Bill Gammell, with both Wiseman and Gammell going on to win UK national awards.

Managing Director of Keenan Recycling, Grant Keenan, who was a finalist in the same award last year, said:

“It is quite an achievement to reach the finals of this award for a second year in a row and to be recognised alongside some of Scotland’s most successful and respected entrepreneurs. We are both driven to continue to build Keenan Recycling as a leader in the organics recycling industry and encourage Scotland to move towards zero waste to landfill. Being recognised as a potential contender in these awards is a great honour for the team as a whole.”

Jim Bishop, senior partner and Entrepreneur of the Year leader at Ernst & Young in Scotland, said:

“The awards recognise and reward those entrepreneurs who drive growth and innovation with total determination, self-belief and a commitment to succeed.

The value with which their products and services are viewed is evident in the success they continue to enjoy despite the difficulties experienced in the wider economy. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and the crucial contributions they are making to Scotland’s recovery.”

The overall Scotland winner will be announced at an exclusive event held at The Gleneagles Hotel on 21 June.
